Introduction
The project lists officers and men who served with units of the Burma Auxiliary Force (B.A.F.) and the Burma Intelligence Corps (B.I.C.). Many of the members of the Burma Intelligence Corps were found from the Burma Auxiliary Force and it seemed useful to combine the personnel lists to better show the progression for some men through the B.A.F. into the B.I.C. The list is not an attempt to provide full biographies of military service. The entries are instances where an officer or man is recorded in the sources as serving with either the B.A.F. or the B.I.C.
Burma Auxiliary Force
Before the outbreak of World War II, the Burma Auxiliary Force had been an entirely volunteer corps of officers and men, either British residents of Burma or Anglo- Burmans. The Burma units all trace their origins to volunteer units formed in the 1870s and 1880s as part of the then Indian Volunteer Corps. In 1917 the Volunteer Corps was replaced by the short-lived Indian Defence Force which was succeeded in 1920 by the Auxiliary Force. With the separation of Burma from the Government of India in April 1937, the Burma units were transferred to the newly formed Burma Auxiliary Force.
Before the outbreak of World War II the Burma Auxiliary Force continued to operate as a part-time volunteer corps. The basic demands placed on the officers and men were to undergo basic training and to attend occasional weekends and the annual camp. In times of need during peacetime men were expected to turn out in uniform to provide a show of strength or to guard vital points. Technical military expertise was provided by permanent staff, normally senior warrant officers seconded from the British or Indian Armies.
With the outbreak of war and the expansion of the Burma Armed Forces, officers for all units came to be found from the Indian and British Armies and from new schemes implemented since the start of the war. One such scheme saw the creation of an Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU). Under the provisions of the National Service (British European Subjects) Act, 1940, British subjects in Burma between the ages of 18 and 50, were required to undergo three months' military training. In Burma, this was achieved by embodying the men into the Burma Auxiliary Force and by attachment to British Infantry Battalions in convenient batches referred to as ‘Militia Companies’. At the end of these attachments, those considered suitable were selected for a four month OCTU course, with a view to appointment to Emergency Commissions in British service, in the case of Europeans, and in the ABRO in the case of Burmans. It was planned for the first batch of 60 officers coming from the OCTU to be available by about April 1941 (in fact 61 cadets were commissioned on 28th April 1941). This was to be followed by further batches at six monthly intervals (a second batch produced a similar number of officers in October 1941). This approach was expected to produce more than 200 officers. Men who were not successful in passing OCTU remained members of the B.A.F., available for service if and when required in the event of an emergency. During and after the withdrawal to India a number of officers were formally embodied into the Army by being commissioned in the Army in Burma Reserve of Officers (A.B.R.O.)
Meanwhile a number of B.A.F. companies were embodied into the Burma Defence Force and provided guards for vital points such as wireless stations, telephone exchanges, power generation facilities and water pumping stations. When the Japanese entered the war, the units were embodied once again, this time as complete units, with the exception of those released from service because of the importance of their civil employment. Throughout the fighting and the subsequent withdrawal to India the B.A.F. provided guard and security detachments on the lines of communication, most notably manning river steamers and launches and key elements of the railways.
After reaching India, the personnel of the B.A.F. were gathered at Mhow, near Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The infantry units were disbanded and the personnel reorganised into the 5th Field Battery, the 1st Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery and the 1st Coast Defence Battery, together with a Burma Auxiliary Force Depot and Record Office. Surplus men were retained by the Depot as reinforcements. Many were subsequently transferred to the Burma Intelligence Corps.
Burma Intelligence Corps
The Corps was raised in November 1942 to provide personnel to act in liaison between the Army and local inhabitants of Burma. The Corps was a body of guides and interpreters who were attached in platoons and small detachments to support military formations. The term "intelligence" was misleading as the purpose of the Corps was to help the military establish good relations with local Burmese in their area of operations and to act as interpreters. The Burma Intelligence Corps was the responsibility of the Government of Burma, who administered the Corps but placed it at the disposal of the Indian Army for operations.
In order to perform the role of interpreters and interrogators in Burmese and liaison between forward troops and Burmese civilians, a high standard of Burmese-speaking was required. In addition, given that much of the work undertaken was without supervision by their own officers and often as individuals, the men needed to be of a higher calibre than a standard infantryman. They had responsibility for the lives of the men of the patrols they guided and for the value and reliability of the information they brought back.
Officers were found from all elements of the Burma Army and from new recruits, the majority being officers in the A.B.R.O. They were British, Anglo-Burmese or Burmese and all had lived for varying periods in different parts of Burma. They knew well the language and customs and for the most part were trilingual, speaking English, Burmese and Urdu (the name used by many in the British and Indian Armies for Hindustani, known as Hindi in modern India, and being essentially the same language as Urdu, by which it is known in modern Pakistan). Many also spoke one or more of the Burmese dialects and had specialised knowledge of different parts of Burma.
The men (other ranks and N.C.Os.) were classified into two categories. The first category was “Burma Auxiliary Force Other Ranks”, referred to as “BORs” or sometimes just “British”. These men were largely Anglo-Burmans with a proportion of educated indigenous Burmese, generally either Burmese or Karen. They were trilingual, speaking English, Burmese, Urdu and in some instances other ethnic languages or dialects. They had the status, pay and privileges of British Other Ranks. The second category was “Burma Army Other Ranks”, referred to as “BAORs”. These men were largely indigenous Burmese or Burma-born Gurkha sepoys drawn from The Burma Regiment and later the 2nd Battalion, The Burma Rifles. They were usually only bilingual, speaking Burmese and Urdu, although many spoke English of a kind and a few spoke a little Kachin. They were thus assigned to work with Indian formations.
There were never enough Burmese-speaking officers and men to meet all requirements and the Burma Intelligence Corps found itself in competition for personnel with Force 136 (Special Operations Executive or S.O.E.) and the Civil Affairs Service, Burma or CAS(B). To meet the requirements of the first expansion of the Corps, in January 1943 it was agreed to disband both the 1st Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery, B.A.F. at Mhow and the 5th Field Battery, B.A.F. at Ranchi. During the latter stages of the war there were ongoing administrative searches to find suitable personnel and in February 1945 some twenty men were released to the Corps from the 1st Coastal Battery of the B.A.F., then based at Calcutta. However the shortage was never completely resolved before the war ended.
The Burma Intelligence Corps was retained after the Japanese surrender to help Burma Army deal with internal security problems. The need for Burmese speaking interpreters to accompany the Army in the field continued up until independence in 1947.
