A somewhat singular theft was tried by Mr Beale, First Class Magistrate last Wednesday. Superstitious Burmans pull out the hairs of an elephant's tail for talismans making rings out of them and other charms. One Nga Tun Lin went into an elephant shed at Ahlone and pulled six hairs out of a bull elephants tail secreting them in his umbrella. The mahout challenged him and he promptly shook the hairs out of the umbrella. They fell on some straw, were picked up, and put forward in evidence of theft. The man was convicted and sentenced to receive 20 lashes.
The Gharrywallahs in Mandalay who were under trail for causing the death of a soldier of the Essex Regiment were discharged for want of sufficient evidence to make out a charge against either of them.

General News
Elephant
In the jungle near the end of the Twanti Creek where it joins the Irrawaddy there is a tuskless elephant roaming about, continually raiding the cultivated land round villages and scaring the Shan villagers. The local Government has given permission to anyone to shoot the animal, but the place where this elephant is to be generally found is a marsh covered by "kine" grass and infested with cobras to such an extent that nobody cares to go near the spot.

Tigers
On the 31st ultimo, Mr Johnson of Insein shot a fine tigress. While out after deer, stripes appeared and a well directed shot from the great shikari stopped her career. This is Mr Johnson's 17th Tiger. On the night of the 1st instant, a tiger, supposed to be the mate of the one shot the previous day, entered Mr. Reddie's stables, at Insein, near the 11th mile on the Prome Road, and mauled a fine horse which had to be destroyed. The gardeners living in the neighbourhood refused to sleep on the premises at night and several sportsmen went in search of the animal.

Police News
If the Honorary Magistrates of Rangoon wished to prevent Mr McDonnell, the present District Superintendent of Police from being appointed Commissioner of the city's Police when the re-organisation scheme comes into force, they went the right way about it, by holding a meeting and unanimously passing a vote in his favour just as though it were a municipal affair and their names had been published to the list of voters. As a flattering tribute to an excellent and popular officer the meeting was all right, but there are less popular officials with more influence in the service who may consider this little unauthorised demonstration, from a different point of view and look upon it as implying a slur upon their services, prompted by interested persons. In which connection, the supreme government would be still more likely to take an adverse view of an election by Honorary Magistrates of an officer, however worthy he may be, to a step of promotion in his department, especially in view of the present out-cry against pitchforking officials over the heads of their seniors.
The police found a large new Gladstone bag, quite empty in 41st Street, on Tuesday morning. It is marked "E.S." and belongs to Mr Summers.
Mr Hannay of No.14 Barr Street, Rangoon reported to the police yesterday morning that his watch and chain valued at 30 guineas were missing from his waistcoat pocket from which they were presumably stolen the previous night.
Thieves broke into the house occupied by Capt. Brookes in Brooking Street a week ago and carried off a considerable amount of money and jewellery. Mr Henry who also lives in the house lost his gold watch and chain and some money.
Driver Weskins, of the Locomotive Workshops at Insein reported to the police yesterday that his rooms were entered and a steel trunk containing some gold and silver jewellery and a ten rupee note was wrenched open and the note alone abstracted.
