Mogok Cemetery
An ABL member (J.G.) has alerted us to an overgrown and apparently un-cared for cemetery in Mogok, a local committee is being formed for it's protection, we await further news and will advise asap. After a bit of homework by the ABL we now know that these graves are in Bernardmyo, "The military station of Bernardmyo was established, with a view to its being developed into a sanitarium and the district headquarters were fixed at Mogok which is the centre of the ruby industry..." &
"c. 1897 “..About twelve miles to the north-west of Mogok is the hill station of Bernard Myo, so called from Sir Charles Bernard. The station is 7,555 ft. above sea level and is garrisoned by troops from the Shwebo cantonment. The town [Mogok] most attractively semi-surrounds the deep blue lake that covers the old working [of the mines.] From the less populated shore the hills rise to a peak of seven thousand feet at Bernardmyo which in the early days of British occupation was a sanatorium and convalescent station for sick troops.”
Update Jan. 2015
One of the Regiments concerned has volunteered £200 for a clean up operation and we are in touch with a few of the others, so hopefully the graves will be protected.
