There was not a particularly large attendance ... Immediately after the races ... the stewards ... not satisfied with the running ... called upon the stable for an explanation which was furnished and a meeting was then held at the full board of stewards ... They have issued the following order on the subject:-
“The stewards of the Rangoon Turf Club have carefully considered the report of the stewards of the day of the meeting held on the 5th Jan. and are satisfied that Mr Townsend’s pony, Thaung Sein, was not ridden to win. Further that the trainer, Maung Po Lu, shall be warned off the Rangoon Turf Club for the remainder of the season and that the licence of jockey Maung Bala be cancelled and that he be suspended until 31st Dec. 1918.”

Akyab News
Gymkhana Club Lawn Tennis Tournament
Following the conclusion of the Volunteer Club Lawn Tennis Tournament the Akyab Gymkhana Club opened theirs with the first match played off on the 16th ultimo. Members of the Volunteer and the Telegraph Clubs were invited to join the competition and eight of the former and six of the latter entered. The system of play adopted was the “knock-out” one and the games were not limited to sets of six as usual; but two in succession and above six had to be scored to be declared winners. Fourteen couples entered including five ladies. Messrs. San Shwe and Gallagher and Ford and Law drew byes. There were six games to be played in the first round, four in the second and two in the third, the winners of which played in the finals. It being a “knock-out” system the competition necessarily took a much shorter time than the last two to complete. Uncertainty of the game, as far as players are concerned, was never more in evidence than in the present three tournaments held in Akyab. Gallagher and Platel the holders of the Open Competition Prize in the Volunteer Club Tournament were both beaten in their first venture at the Gym, though they had partners equally goof – Messrs. San Shwe and Barnes – the latter who partnered Mr Fraser stood second in the last tournament. Montgomery, who gave an excellent exhibition of tennis, both in the doubles and the singles, at the Volunteer court and entertained hope of securing the first place in the present competition was, with his partner, Mr Clifford, beaten in the semi-finals. The management deserves much credit for the satisfactory way in which the competitions were classed and drawn to play. Two of the “B” class had to meet a couple of “A” and “C” together. The fact that certain couples have had to play as far as 24 games before securing a victory was proof of the success of the system. Details of the tournament are as follows:-
In the 1st round - Messrs. Baum and Maple beat Miss Willson and Mr Moultrie – 7-5
Messrs Clifford and Montgomery beat Mr and Mrs Bocker – 10-8
Messrs. Lees and Goddard beat Mrs Baguley and Mr Fraser – 13-11 (a hard fought game and which at first seemed an easy victory for the latter the game being 5-1 in their favour)
Mrs Clifford and Mr Rees beat Messrs. Lowry and George – 8-6
Messrs. Saxty and Moylan beat Messrs. Baguley and Evans – 7-2
Mrs Lees and Mr Gaudie beat Messrs. Barnes and Platel – 7-4
In the 2nd round – Baum and Maple beat Gallagher and San Shwe – 10-8
Clifford and Montgomery beat Lees and Goddard – 7-2
Moylan and Saxty beat Mrs Clifford and Rees – 7-2
Mrs Lees and Gaudie beat Ford and Law – 7-1
In the 3rd round – the Semi Finals – Baum and Maple beat Clifford and Montgomery – 7-4
Moylan and Saxty beat Mrs Lees and Gaudie – 7-4
In the final, which came off on Saturday the 27th ultimo, Baum and Maple met Moylan and Saxty. This game proved to be lacking in interest. With the exception of Maple, who was in good form, the rest did not show up very well, though both these couples had by their previous play given hopes of putting up a fine display. It was only by the one side or the other conceding points that the game concluded in a little over an hour. Twelve games had to be played before Baum and Maple secured a victory over their opponents by 7-5. The members of the Gymkhana Club and particularly Mr Clifford, honorary secretary, are to be congratulated on the success of their tournament.

Rival Football Associations
It looks as if Moulmein is to have two rival tournaments of “footer” going on simultaneously this rainy season. The Tenasserim Athletic Assoc., a recently formed organisation in Moulmein, has had an eye for some time on the Tenasserim Football Assoc. which has been in existence for over twenty years and has made several overtures to the latter body with a view to amalgamation ; but the suitor’s advances have always been met with scorn. Now the latter has instituted an inaugural cup league of its won and is endeavouring to capture the teams that formerly played for the Tenasserim Football Assoc. The Assoc. held its annual business meeting on Thursday evening in the Municipal building, Moulmein, there being a large attendance presided over by Lt.-Col. F.H.T. Buchanan, I.D.F. ... The following gentlemen were elected as office bearers and members of council for the ensuing year: F.H.T. Buchanan, President ; B.W. Perkins, Vice-president ; J.J.A. Shaw, Hony. Secy ; W.R. Purves, Hony. Treasurer ; Messrs. Chit Swe, Po Shwe, G. Venkat-reddy Naidu (sic) and H.S. Ismail, members of council. As Mr Shaw is unable to act as secretary he will be given a seat on the council and Mr Kenneth McGibbon has been invited to take up the secretary-ship. ...

Swimming Club
The Kokine Swimming Club brought off their first monsoon competition at the bath on Sunday May 26th and despite the heavy rain a fair number of members and their friends turned out to watch the sport. A programme of six events had been arranged, but of these two competitions for ladies had to be postponed, several of the entrants failing to put in an appearance. In the novices handicap (one length) Mackness, who displayed surprising form, won by a touch from Lt. Illingworth, Lt. Palmer being a good third. Somerville, who won the cock-fighting for light weights, took on Capt. Gill, the winner of the heavy weights, but was vanquished after a brief struggle. In the team races the Club represented by Messrs. Smiles, Hayward, McKenzie, Wilson, Goodchild and McIntyre proved too fast for the Military (Major Hamilton-Britton, Capt. Gill, Lieuts. Palmer, Illingworth, Scott and Copplestone) winning by half a length. As usual the water polo match, in which the Military again opposed the Club, provided much entertainment for the spectators. Hepburn in goal for the Club was unbeatable and a close game left his side winners by two goals to love.

Paperchase
Rangoon Paperchase Club
Apparently there is to be a boom in paperchasing this season if one may judge by the attendance of followers up to date. On Saturday there was a record, no less than 32 facing the first fence on Kambe Hill and most of them were at the finish. The master sent away the small ponies first and these included nearly 20 members of the Mounted Platoons. ... The course then ran north through the jungle and circled back over the south-western slopes of the hill where the going was good and the fences all taken without mishap. The remainder of the run was the usual one over the pagoda plateau and through the Chinaman’s garden to the club house. It is not possible to give the names of all those who went the course but amongst others were the Master on Greydawn, Mrs Sinclair on Orby, Ritchie on his new big bay Waler, A.B. Campbell on Chum, Wilson on Iris, Eddis on Leo, Beamish on Japan, Hopson on Shelfanger, Lonsdale on Sein Kalon, his recent purchase, Cowie on Starlight, Marsh on Tinker and later on Leila, Harding on Miss Molly, Gunning, Rogers, Hudson, Michie, McCreath, Howison, Jenkins, Corcoran and others. ... The weather was by no means promising for the run on Thursday afternoon ... However, for a mid-week run there was a goodly attendance, fourteen or more going the full course ... There was a ding-dong finish between Heughan and Hopson on diminutive chargers and they finished a considerable distance in front ... Atalanta made her debut this season with her owner up and both looked very fit after their change to Maymyo. Mrs Sinclair was on Orby ...

On Saturday, 15th, the record field for some years met at the club at Kokine to negotiate a somewhat difficult course worked out by Mr Hopson, no less than 35 lining up at a hurdle down by the old rifle butts. Paddy with Osman Halliday up and Ritchie on A.B. gave the big animals a lead and they were followed by the smaller ponies after a short interval. The turf was a bit “squashy” on the low ground, but bearing east to the jungle fine ground was struck and this continued to Kambe and on the plateau to the Chinaman’s garden. Five or six fences were negotiated on the way and if one or two stopped there was nothing serious in the way of falls. The course then ran in a circle through wooded country and it required some clever steering to go the pace and at the same time avoid collisions with trees and other obstructions. A stiffish mud wall on the way home caused a little trouble but the whole field eventually got around.
Two nasty looking “croppers” took place at the last jump. One well known jumper living up to his name caused his rider to see stars. There was quite a good finish between Goodchild on Micky Free and Marsh on Tinker, with Wilson well up on a large animal the property of the King-Emperor. The ladies were represented by Mrs Sinclair on Orby and Miss Nancy Pullen on Marcus both of whom were well to the fore at the finish. Others out besides those mentioned were Gaunt on Greydawn, Campbell on Chum, Beamish on Japan, Crosthwaite on a bay mare of Mr Richie’s, Cowie on Starlight, Lonsdale on Sein Kalon, Hopson on Maharu, Stoneham on Muskrat, Harding on Lassie, Morgan on Nightlight, Colvin on a polo pony, W.T. Howison on His Honour, Scott, Heughan, Ellis, Ady. A large number of spectators were present at the club to witness the finish.

There was quite a good attendance at the race track ... to witness the June extra meeting ... The public bar is again under the management of Mr Paul, who will continue to run it until the end of the year, he having given general satisfaction. ... But a good many of those who follow paperchasing in Rangoon pinned their faith to Leo, Shelfanger and Iris and in this they were not far wrong, for these three had all the running from the start until Iris refused before hald the distance had been gone and Shelfanger and Leo fought it out practically alone, Leo winning in the distance by a short head. Sein Kalon never figured prominently and coming down with his rider at the half mile he was out of it. Maharu, the veteran paperchaser, was brought into the money by Mr Noyce, the rest being beaten off ... ABL note: The following are the names of a few of the other owners:- Maung Po Thwai ; Mr Hardatt ; Maung Po Thein ; Mr York ; C.W. Ellis ; C.A. Hopson ; W.H. Lonsdale ; Ma Mya May.

The second game was a much better exhibition of good play on both sides, the traffic winning the set 6-4. In the final set the traffic proved themselves too good for their opponents and won 6-3. After the game the guests adjoined to Mr Rosair’s quarters where they partook of light refreshments and indulged in games and music till about 8.30 o’clock, when a very pleasant gathering broke up.

Syriam Gymkhana 7 : Army Y.M.C.A. 1
In the second round of the first division Senior league of the B.A.A. competition, the Syriam Gymkhana met the Army Y.M.C.A. on Saturday. The attendance was not by any means food owing perhaps to the inclement weather and the races. On the last occasion these two teams met the Syriam Gymkhana defeated the Army Y.M.C.A. by four goals to one. The defeat by a larger margin on this occasion was due to the army team having had to provide against the indisposition of a number of their players and in consequence having to get up a scratch team. Nevertheless they put up a plucky fight and were, if not for their weak halves, they might have fared better. Their forward were goon in individual work but lacked dash, and goal-getting abilities with the result that they hardly got past the rival backs, and only on one occasion succeed in finding the net. The exhibition on both sides was poor from a spectacular point of view, but this perhaps was due to the heavy ground.
There were two changes in the Syriam team: McGeorge (sic) at left half in place of Butchart who is injured, and Pugsley instead of G. Stuart the outside right. Pugsley, who had been left out during the previous game owing to illness, has returned to strengthen the team considerably. C.D. Stuart was a tower of strength in the Syriam term and so also was McCann, while Laidman played his usual dashing game and scored three out of the seven secured by his side. Woods, the Army custodian, was kept busy right throughout the evening and made some good saves. The game throughout was one long attack by the Syriam team with intervals when the Army forwards, prominent among whom were Wilcocks, Fry and Brack, made individual efforts to break through but without any result. The only goal scored by the Army team was a splendid effort on the part of Wilcocks who securing from Fry beat White and converted, leaving no chance whatsoever to Quick to save. Of the seven goals scored by the Syriam Gymkhana Laidman got three, Black two and Anderson two. The game ended in a win for the Syriam team by seven goals to one. The following played:-
Syriam Gymkhana: Quick ; White, McCann ; McLean, Stuart, McGregor ; Black, Pugsley, Laidman, Anderson, Hammond.
Army Y.M.C.A: Woods, Oliver, Carr, Cowie, Clarke, Florence, Fry, Head, Wilcocks, Brack, Hellaby.

Syriam Gymkhana (0) v Y.M.C.A. (0)
The match between these teams on Sept. 28th ended in a draw of one all and on the game being replayed on Saturday it resulted in another tie, no goals being scored on this occasion. Apart from the evenness in strength of the teams, the results of their two meetings show that the defence on both sides is decidedly stronger than the attack. The Syriam Gymkhana pressed home their attacks better than their opponents, but Laidman was too well marked to score, while Pugsley lost some openings through hanging on to the ball too long. In the rear lines, Stuart played an exceptionally strong game for Syriam and was only supported by McLean. McCann, left back of the team, was badly missed, his substitute Hood, whose first appearance it was this season, being apparently out of practice and below the form he used to display in past years. In the Y.M.C.A. team, Knight of the Bedfords, played as centre forward, Taylor going to left half. But the forwards were off colour and their combination was poor and very ineffective. In defence Green and Mason were very sound and saved the situation time and again. While on one side and Magee on the other were conspicuous for their useful work, especially in long clearing kicks. On the whole it was an interesting, closely contested game, but the standard of play was not very high on either side.

Kambe Turf Club
The last meeting of the Kambe Racing Club was held last Saturday. The afternoon was delightfully pleasant and the attendance was very good. The course was in excellent condition as it was continually watered right up to about half an hour before the first race. The Hon. Mr F.F. Goodliffe was an enforced absentee as he was suffering from influenza and confined to bed. Mr W. Bennett, one of the stewards, was also absent as he as up country on a holiday.
The racing throughout was very good and the finishes were close, particularly in two instances when heads separated the second., third and fourth. This showed good handicapping. In the first race an objection was lodged by Mr H.A. Gabell the trainer of Thamin Ma, against the winner Shwe Thamin for crossing after they had passed the home turn. It was an obvious cross and the objection was upheld by the stewards and the race awarded to Thamin Ma. On the whole the sport afforded was very good and a fitting conclusion to a very successful season at Kambe Park.
Credit is due to the stewards particularly Mr Goodliffe who has spared no pains whatever to make racing clean. Mr Reginald Powell, who was the stipendiary steward for the first half of the season gave the club the benefit of his knowledge of racing and his experience and it was unfortunate that owing to ill health he was compelled to resign. His place was taken up by Mr C. Stewart who has been equally successful. Later in the season on the appointment of a new handicapper in the person of Mr P.R. Henderson, the handicapping left nothing to be desired and the club is to be congratulated on securing the services of an able and experienced racing man. ...

There was an excellent attendance at the race track on Saturday when the seventh autumn extra meeting was run. There were two incidents of note in connection with the meeting, the finish of the bookmakers on the Rangoon track and the running of the totalisator by Messrs. Craig, Gardner and Harris.
