Burma Contingent - Rangoon Send Off
... ... first portion of Burma’s Contingent of Volunteers for service at the front a farewell message ... ... Ninety one picked men, all enthusiasts, looking spick and span and military in their Khaki serge uniforms, have gone as the earnest of what Burma is prepared to do in taking her share in the defence of the Empire. The Burma Contingent proposal was mooted in November: today saw the fruition of at least part of that proposal and the gallant men who have volunteered left with the “God sped and safe return” from many thousands of people in this province, from the highest to the lowest. ... ... This morning the centre point of interest was the Port Defence Headquarters which was the assembly point of the Contingent. Here they were photographed in their new uniforms. A large crowd had foregathered including many parents and friends of the volunteers. To many it was not exactly a time of rejoicing – the prospect of parting from their relatives, sons and best friends; but they bore up bravely and made the parting less of an ordeal for the patriots who have left. At ten o’clock the whole of the Contingent breakfasted at the Strand Hotel and amongst those who attended the breakfast were Capt. A.C. Hamilton, he exceedingly popular officer, who is in command of the Contingent; Lt. A.E. Mann, the second in command; Lt. P. Hughes, No. 2 Platoon Commander; Mr deGlanville, Rev’d. J. A. Drysdale, Dr. T.F. Pedley, W.M. Turner etc. An excellent breakfast was provided. Last evening a number of the Contingent were entertained to dinner at Romanis and did full justice to the excellent fare provide by the chef Mr Hocquart. The dinner concluded with the enthusiastic singing of the National Anthem and the “Marseillaise” the later being led by M. Hocquart. The ninety one men are drawn from all parts of Burma; from far off Namtu and Myitkyina from Tavoy and of course a number of Rangoon folk, many calling in life being represented. While on board they will be drilled in rifle and bayonet exercises, for the kindness of the Burma Oil Co. a number of dummy rifles and bayonets weighted to regulation weight have been presented to the Contingent, while boxing gloves and other sporting accessories have been very kindly presented by Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co. and Rowe & Co. and a large number of friends and well-wishers have presented cheroots, cigarettes and books to while away the tedium of the voyage. This morning Capt. Hamilton received the following telegram from Major-Genl. Raitt, Commanding Burma Divn:- “Much regret impossible for me to see the Contingent off on Saturday. Please give them my best wishes for the voyage. I hope they will soon get to the front where I am certain they will do honour to themselves and to Burma.” ... ... The Departure
There were scenes of enthusiasm this afternoon at the departure of the Contingent. Long before the advertised time to start crowds thronged Lewis Start and the approaches of the Port Defence Hall. The interior of this was an animated scene and gradually the whole Contingent, looking spick and span in their khaki uniforms, arrived. Then came the Rangoon Volunteer Rifles and the band. First of all the roll was called by Capt. Hamilton and the men lined up in two platoons, each, two deep. They presented a fine sight looking a very well set up body of men who would give a good account of themselves when they got to the front. It was an inspiring scene. Amongst early arrivals on the sport were the Hon’ble W.F. Rice, Chief Secretary to the Govt. ; the Hon’ble Col. F.H. Townsend, Commissioner of Pegu ; Col. Graham, Commanding the R.V.R., some officers of the Burma Railways Volunteer Corps, Mr Chisholm, P.A. Churchward and others. Shortly afterwards a slight stir announced the arrival of Brigadier-Genl. Johnston attended by Capt. Broadbent, officiating Brigade Major and Capt. Benson Cooke, Station Staff Officer. The men stood to attention as Brigadier-Genl. Johnson passed up and down the lines on his tour of inspection and afterwards they were formed two deep representing two sides of a square and General Johnson addressed the. He said he felt it a very great honour to be present there to bid farewell to this fine contingent of men. He was sort it was impossible for General Raitt to be present that day to bid them farewell and also that the present Lt.-Governor was unable to be present. As they all knew both these gentlemen had taken a great interest in the contingent ever since the outset. Mr deGlanville had received a telegram from the Lt.-Governor, which he proceeded to read to the men and which was greeted with cheers. He was sure that all resent would be very glad to hear the sentiments of Sir. Harvey Adamson towards the contingent. He (the speaker) had seen a good deal of the men in the course of their preparation and he had found out that some of them, at any rate, were joining this contingent at great pecuniary and personal inconvenience to themselves. He was sure that everybody here would be pleased at the spirit and patriotism which animated them and the other men who were going to fight for their country at the front, which it was their ultimate intention to do. The actual numbers of this contingent did not represent all those men who would like to go. He was aware that there were many there who if they could have so arranged their family and business affairs would have been only too glad to join and more than double the strength of this contingent would therefore have been represented. There were also others who for health and other reasons could not be accepted. But these also were worthy of their thanks for their public spirit in offering to go. There had been some idea that Burma was not doing what it ought to have done in sending forward men for the war. He did not think it was generally known what men had actually gone from Burma for service. In the Reserve of Officers so far 77 men had been accepted and out of that 38 have already been appointed to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers ; and then there were at least 50 men belonging to firms in Burma who were at Home when the war broke out, who joined there. Then there were those who had gone Home from Burma at their own expense to join. He could not exactly say what these numbers were ; but taking them altogether in addition to the 91 of the Burma Contingent, who were going now, it made well over 200 men from Burma ; and he did not think that Burma had done so badly after all. He did not know whether people knew about this and he therefore took this opportunity of informing them. Having finished with these statistics he would like to address some remarks to the men about their training. Some of them had done very few drills. Others had been a good many years in the Volunteers and other in the Regular Army but even to these last he would say they would find a good deal to learn before they took their part at the front. Dealing with the various branches of training that were absolutely essential for service at the front, he would say that first of all there was marching. They should always keep their position in the march in order that the company, when the commander finds he has to change the disposition of the men to any other formation, could do so easily. It was essential also that they should learn to shoot with absolute accuracy. That was of great importance. Then came bayonet fighting which was a very important branch of their training and was being taken up very much now at Home. Dealing with trenches he said he had no doubt they had all seen the shallow ditches in field operations and they would probably be able to make such, but they required something much more than that. They should be able to make a trench of a large capacity where men could live and from which they could shoot. That meant and required hard work and that was where discipline came in. Next with regard to the voyage. He understood from Capt. Hamilton that he had arranged for a number of exercises so that they could keep fit and they would not find the sea voyage tedious in anyway. When they had finished their training and went to the front they would in the meantime have made some acquaintance with a certain song, a knowledge of which was essential. “Tipperary” was essential for the front. When they went to the front they would find themselves an unimportant unit no doubt, in a very large army and probably they would think they would not have very much opportunity of doing anything. He would tell them that in war opportunities always came and especially for actual individual gallantry. He hoped they would remember that and if they had an opportunity they would use it well, so that they in Burma would read their names in the list of persons who had been mentioned in the field for gallantry. Before he finished there were two more points. One was that the thanks of the whole community were due to those who had taken much trouble to raise, equip and despatch the whole contingent. He meant the names of Mr deGlanville (cheers) and Capt. Stewart, Mr Churchward and the generous subscribers and others and the Patrick Henderson Co. for their concession. Their thanks were due lastly to the enthusiastic and energetic Commander Capt. Hamilton. (Loud cheers.) It only remained for him on behalf of the country in general to wish them a happy voyage, all luck and success in the war and a safe return to Burma. (Loud cheers.) The final scenes After General Johnston’s speech the men were allowed to fall out and say goodbye to their friends. At 2.20 they fell in again and led by A., N. and the Highland companies of the R.V.R. with the corps band in front and the Burma Railways Vol. Corps band immediately in front of themselves, a short march was made through the town, the route taken being Lewis St., Merchant St., Phayre St., Strand Road and Lewis St. to the jetty. Here they broke off again for final leave taking. The passage to the jetty was lined on either side by the R.V.R. As the contingent reached the junction of Merchant and Lewis Streets the crowds, several thousand in number, burst into cheers that continued till the jetty was reached. After a halt of a few minutes the men proceeded on board for the final leave takings. They bore themselves well, however, and with a cheerful word and happy smile passed on to the launch amid shouts of greetings mixed with cheers. The contingent being safely embarked the R.V.R. were drawn up facing the river and three final hearty cheers were given. Though the approaches to the launch were barred many stayed to the last in the hope of a final glimpse and as the boat came into view with the men on board one final roar went out to speed them on their way. Just before the contingent embarked, Mr A.K.A.S. Jamal, who has done so much towards supplying the means of the contingent going, was introduced to the officers and wished the contingent God speed. Burma Contingent
Send off to Second Draft
Send off to Second Draft
Today the second draft of the Burma Contingent – 20 in number – bringing the total Burma Contingent to 111, were given a send off. The men in their khaki serge uniforms and caps fell in at the R.P.D.V. Headquarters in Lewis St. after which they were photographed. At 9.30a.m. they, together with a number of friends, sat down to an enjoyable breakfast at the Strand Hotel, which Mr Sarkies, the proprietor, generously provide for free to all the Contingent members and friends.
Afterwards the men again fell in at the R.P.D.V. Headquarters in two sections. B.S. Minty was in command of the draft and the section commanders were (No. 1) R.W. Black and (No. 2) R. McNeill. The men were a well set up lot and certainly looked as if they would give an excellent account of themselves when they get to the front. The contingent numbers several B.O.C. employees in its ranks and amongst those who turned up to see them off, therefore, were a number of engineers and assistants of the B.O. Co. of Rangoon and Syriam. The remaining members of the Contingent were:- |

At 12 o’clock Brigadier-Genl. Johnstone, Commanding Rangoon Brigade, accompanied by Capt. Broadbent, officiating Brigade Major and Capt. Benson-Cooke, Station Staff Officer, arrived. The men were lined up in the Hall in two sections and General Johnstone inspected them. Afterwards he have a short address, in the course of which he said that when addressing the first draft of the Contingent he made some remarks about the training and how they could become proficient before proceeding to the front. A number of them had heard him on the last occasion and a lot of them had also read his remarks; so he did not propose to repeat what he had said on the previous occasion. They would, however, no doubt realise that they had a great deal to learn when they got Home, before they could actually go to the front. The numbers of this draft were considerable smaller than the first, but he had seen almost all of the second draft at one time or another in his office recently and he had no doubt they would make a good a show as the draft which left a month ago would. They would all be glad to know that the first draft had reached Home safely and by this time, no doubt, it was training and working hard.
The Lt.-Governor regretted that a business engagement made it not possible to be present to inspect them that morning. General Johnstone proceeded to state that on the last occasion he mentioned the assistance which a number of people had rendered in the matter and he must mention on this occasion the part Mr deGlanville had taken and the trouble he had gone to in the matter in getting the Contingents together and he (he speaker) thought he was to be congratulated on the result. The military authorities and public were grateful to him. He had nothing more to say except to wish them a pleasant voyage to the Home country and to hope that they would soon get thought with their training and become a very efficient lot and at the earliest possible moment they would leave for the front. He wished them all luck possible. Afterwards the Contingent marched down to Barr St. jetty where a considerable number assembled to see them off on the launch, General Johnstone being present at the jetty and shaking hands with those in charge of the draft. The following telegram was received by the Officer Commanding the Draft of the Burma Contingent from General Raitt, Commanding Burma Divn:- “Sorry impossible see your draft before departure and hope you will have the best of luck and gain much honour for yourselves and Burma.” This was read to the men by B.S. Minty before they left. His Honour the Lt.-Governor sent a message expressing his regret that he was unable to be present at the wharf to wish the detachment God speed, but sent his best wishes to the officers and men and assured them that he would watch their movements with the deepest interest. |

The Burma Contingent
A Naval Recruits letter. The following extracts are from a letter received by a Rangoon resident from a member of the Burma Contingent who is now serving in the Royal Navy:- “Just a line to let you know that during these troublesome times I still retain thoughts of old acquaintances in Rangoon. I am writing this on the Continent. Tomorrow we shall probably be bombarding again. Being one of the few members of the Contingent who joined the Navy, I am sure I am the first to be in action. We are at it every alternate day. I cannot say much more regarding it, owing to censorship. If we do happen to be hit with one of those German Jack Johnsons, we shall have little chance. The place we lie opposite is awful, half the place knocked down. Between the shore batteries submarines and Taubes, we are enjoying life. The suspense of waiting is about as bad as the actual business. You may tell --- that I did duck at hearing the first one whistle past, and it was a whopper, it did not miss us by too much, dropping as it did in or wake. Although armed well, we are used especially for our shallow draft and should we get one, well! we shall be extinct. Although along with others, ships like ourselves, we have done more firing and received more than any other during the war this side. We seem also to be the luckiest. I am not sorry having joined as artificer. Although life is, what one would call it in peace time, cruel, yet we don’t grumble. At present it is sleep where you can and when you can, the same with feeding. I am scribbling this note down below on the engine platform and my dinner, a sandwich, is heating on one of the cylinders.” |

B.H. Wiles
The B.H. Wiles mentioned above is the well known artist of subjects
and scenes Burmese. He is at present staying in Rangoon.
Capt. R.S. Hopkins, who according to the list of casualties has been wounded, was formerly Adjutant of the Burma Railways Volunteers for some considerable time. He was an exceedingly popular officer with all ranks and took a very great interest in the Corps which he sought by every possible means in his power to improve. Under his able tuition the men became really efficient at building blockhouses, bridges and making entrenchments. The result of his efforts were most amply demonstrated at the last big camp held by the corps at Myitnge where examples of every branch of engineering work taught by him were to be found and of such good quality as to gain the encomiums of the General Officer Commanding Rangoon Brigade. Capt. Hopkins was equally popular in civil life as among his military confreres and his many friends will be sorry to hear that he has been wounded and wish him a speedy recovery.

Mr Alderton is proceeding to Aldershot where he will rejoin the Royal Flying Corps
in which he formerly held the rank of a Sergt. and was employed as a civilian instructor after passing out at Flamborough. Mr Alderton, who was a member of the Electrical Engineer Coy. was entertained at a dinner, held at the Strand Hotel last Tuesday, by several of his numerous friends. |

The Burma Contingent
Mr H. Awford, late of the B.O.C., Rangoon writes in April from Ross-shire to inform Mr Brough that he is a Lance-Corpl. in the Seaforth Highlanders, having been transferred to that regiment from the Scottish Rifles, as several of the Burma Contingent had enlisted in the Seaforths. He expected when he wrote to be at the front very shortly. |
Rangoon En Fete – Send Off to Volunteers
Mobile Battery Leaves The battery raised in Burma in response to the call made by Govt. for Volunteers to man the 15 prs. in the Persian Gulf left yesterday for Calcutta by the S.S. “Arankola” en route for Bombay. The call had been nobly responded to and the necessary men secured; but there were one or two particular points in the present instance that were worthy of special notice, firstly the spontaneous manner in which a number of school cadets had volunteered to form part of the battery and secondly as His Honour remarked in his farewell speech, it was the first time a representative body of volunteers had gone, as volunteers. The battery was made up of men from nearly every corps in Burma, the Port Defence, the Rangoon Vol. Rifles, the Burma Vol. Artillery so that it was thoroughly represented. The men were given a fine send off, there being the largest gathering yet seen at a function of this kind. The different corps of volunteers were all represented and also the Rangoon Battn. of the Military Police. The occasion was further marked by the presence of the head of the province (the Lieut.-Governor,) Major General Young Commanding the Rangoon Brigade and all the notable officials and leaders of the mercantile community of every caste and creed. The proceedings were further graced by the presence of an unusually large number of ladies. The “Arankola” vessel did not leave from Latter St. Wharf till some time after the advertised hour, 3.30 p.m. but the fall-in was at the Headquarters of the Port Defence Vols. at 2. p.m. The first to arrive were the cadets of St. Paul’s School with their drum and fife band. After obtaining their rifles they were drawn up in Lewis St. facing the headquarters. The Rangoon Vol. Rifles and Port Defence arrived in groups. The former fell in on the Corps ground on the east of Lewis St. near the foreshore, while the Port Defence fell in at Headquarters. After all were ready the Volunteers for the Gulf lined up inside the drill hall, where Col. Evans addressed them. He said this was the forth contingent sent from Burma which with its various volunteer corps had been honoured in being asked to furnish this contingent. The Port Defence had supplied a Major, who he hoped would soon be in command and a number of men. He would watch, with keenness and eagerness for news of what the battery were doing. He felt sure that the artillery would perform it duties as well as it always had done. They would meet with many things that were trying, but everyone had to put up with them when they went on active service. He wished them every success and honour and hoped that they would have good health and return safely. Three cheers were then given for Col. Evans and three for the Contingent. The volunteers then began to take up their positions. First came the Burma Railways Band under Mr Doog then the Cadets with the drums and fife then the R.V.R. and the Burma Railways Volunteers with the Rangoon Volunteer Rifles Band under Mr Duffy bringing up the rear. The men made a fine appearance. The Mobile Battery came last of all. The route taken was northwards along Lewis St. then westwards along Merchant St. to Latter St. where they took up their positions inside No. 3 shed. Nothing has so stirred the citizens of Rangoon for a very long time. The streets were lined the whole way with eager and cheering crowds, while thousands were present at the wharf. On arrival there the volunteers were drawn up in the three sides of a square. On the east were the cadets, on the west the Port Defence and on the north facing the wharf the R.V.R. and B.R.V.C. whilst shortly after the positions had been taken up the Rangoon Battalion of Military Police came on the scene and took up their position in the rear of the volunteers. All these arrangements being completed the Battery were marched to a central position. As the first of the men came into view the thousands present broke into what was meant for three cheers but was really a continued roar. It was a really stirring scene. Shortly afterwards His Honour the Lieut-Governor accompanied by Lady Adamson, Mr Gadsden, Private Secy. and Mr Savi, Aide-de-camp, arrived. He was met by the Commissioner of Police, W.H Tarleton, and was conducted to the south entrance of the shed and so to a position immediately in front of the contingent. The crowd was now very dense. His Honour first inspected the battery and then spoke as follows:- “General Young, Major Anderson and Volunteers, I wish the best of good fortune to the Volunteer Battery that is leaving for the front. I congratulate you on having obtained the opportunity and I am sure that you will justify your selection. We in Burma, the unfortunates who are left behind, will watch your career with interest. From Burma various contingents, outside the regular army, have already gone to the war – a Burma contingent for the English Army, numerous Officers for the Indian Army Reserve, many Civil Medical Officers, the Military Police, Officers and men and other details. But this is the first time that the Burma Volunteers have gone in a collective body as Volunteers. The Artillery Volunteers of Rangoon and Moulmein have been fortunate in being the first called. You have already given proof in your ordinary duties of your keenness and military enthusiasm and I doubt not that now when you have been called to actual warfare you will give a good account of yourselves and that we will have cause to be proud of you. For myself and for the province I wish you the best of luck.” Major Anderson then called for three cheers for His Honour and General Young called for three cheers for the contingent both of which were given with great heartiness. His Honour and Lady Adamson then stayed chatting with the officers of the contingent and after leave-taking the men were marched on board, a photograph being taken as they crossed the gangway. Sir Harvey and Lady Adamson both walked to the steamer gangway, whither the crowds had already surged till there was scarcely breathing space. The Volunteers, with the exception of the band under Mr Duffy, which stayed till the ship left, were then marched back to the Port Defence Headquarters. The vessel did not leave for some time, but despite the heat and the crush, hundreds, including several of the Volunteer Officers remained to the close. The band enlivened the proceedings with lively tunes at intervals and as the steamer sheered away from the wharf broke into “Auld Lang Syne” The cheers were deafening, those on board cheering those on shore and those on shore cheering the departing ones. It was a memorable event and one that will live long in the memory of Rangoon. With the contingent members was also Company Sergt. Major Winchester of the Moulmein Vol. Rifles who went with the battery as Sergt.-Major. The following was the complete list of the Officers and men of the various Corps of Volunteers on parade:- |

H.C. Mountain, another of Rowe & Co’s. employees went home with the first Burma Contingent and was attached to the Seaforth Highlanders. He was among the victims of the gas used by the Germans and did not recover consciousness till he reached hospital in Paris. From there he was sent on to London and now lies ill in hospital where he is daily visited by a member of the firm. The doctors have every hope of his ultimate recovery but fear that he will never again be the same man or fit for work. He came to Burma about two years ago and was attached to the Kyaiklat branch. |
The Borders in Gallipoli
A letter from the Front Private E. Snooks, 29th Division, Army Cyclist Corps (late Border Regt.) writes to us, dated 18th June, an interesting account of the doings of the Border Regt. who in the Gallipoli landing did such feats of valour, but at sore cost to themselves. His letter states: “I thought I would write to let you know that the old Border Regt. is doing all right. After leaving Rangoon last November, we landed in England on the 10th January and we were billeted in Rugby, a very nice place, and during our stay there we entered for the Rugby Town football competition, but got beat in the final. We also won the Boxing, Drummer Crone winning the light-weights. We only got three days pass before leaving England again for the Dardanelles. We left on the 17th March, so you can see we were not at home long. A number of the regiments that left India composed the 29th Division, which is, I think, the best Division that ever left England. Just look at the task we had before us when we landed on the Peninsula coast. It was terrible. What with the shot and shells flying about and the barbed entanglements; I can tell you no other Division could have done it. The old Munster’s are still with us fighting side by side. Of course we have lost a lot of men, but we expected it landing in a place like this. The Turks are very brave, but I think they would pack up if it wasn’t for the German Officers in charge of them. We caught a couple of snipers last week and they told us the officers in charge of them shoot them point blank if they dare to retire from a trench when we are advancing on to them; so it seems as though they are driven to it. I hope our other battalion, who are in Maymyo, are keeping the reputation up that the old 34th had while stationed there. I suppose you know our Commanding Officer, Col. Hume got killed and also Major Brooks, Lt. James, Capt. Morton, Lt. Perry, Lt. Bartholomew, Sergt. Cormack, the boxer, also Pte. Clague, our heavy-weight. There are many more killed but I can’t think of the names at present. Drummer Crone has been wounded. I expect Rangoon is looking at its best as usual. I had a couple of teeth put in just before leaving Rangoon last November and I broke both of them the first day on bully beef and cream crackers which we got in our rations when we landed here. I think that all the 29th Division deserve the V.C. after this lot – I mean those who are left and there is not so many left now. Since I landed home, I have been transferred to the Cyclist Corps, but you can see I am still in the same Division as my own regiment. We have advanced about a number of miles since we landed on the 25th April, slow but sure and we are now, after ---- I must now close in a hurry to take the next trench. From my little dug-out in the east. Yours, Pte. E. Snooks, 29th Division. |

Several cases have occurred lately of men who are well enough to follow their civil vocations and have all the appearances of robust health producing, when warned of military duty, medical certificates of unfitness, signed by somewhat obscure medical practitioners. It is to be noted that exemption is only granted on the report of the Corps or other Military Medical Officer

Lieut. Smyth’s V.C.
On Tuesday we published a short account in our London Letter regarding Lt. J.G. Smyth of 15th Sikhs winning of the Victoria Cross. Lt. J.G. Smyth, it was mentioned, is the son of W.J. Smyth, Deputy Commissioner, Mandalay and has since received a decoration from the Tsar. Hereunder is a description of the deeds which secured Lt. Smyth the coveted cross:- “On the night of the 17th May a company of the 15th Sikhs under Capt. K. Hyde-Cates relieved a portion of the 1st Batt. Highland Light Inf. in a section of a trench known as the “Glory Hole” near the Ferme de Bois on the right of the Indian Army Corps front. Furious fighting has been in progress ere for some time, the position at the moment of relief being that we had taken and occupied a section of the German trench, a portion of the same trench on our left being still held by the enemy who had succeeded in erecting a barricade between themselves and our men. In the early morning Capt. Cates observed that attempts were being made to reinforce the enemy in the trench. A short time afterwards theattack began by heavy bombing to which the 15th replied vigorously and succeed in holding their own until noon, when the position became critical as all our dry bombs had been expended and those that had become wet from rain were found to be useless. It was then resolved to attempt to relieve the situation by sending up a bombing party from the reserve trenches. Two previous attempts which had been made by the Highland Light Inf. had both failed but Lieut. Smyth, a young officer of 21, was of the party. Lieut. Smyth and his party of 10 men started at 2 p.m. to cover the 250 yards which intervened between them and our trench, taken with them two boxes of 96 bombs. The ground to be covered was absolutely open devoid of all natural cover. The only possible shelter from the frightful fire which met the party as soon as they were over our parapet was an old broken down trench which at the best of times was hardly knee deep, but now in places was filled almost to the top with the deal bodies of Highland Light Inf., Worcesters, Indians and Germans. Dropping over our parapet they wriggled their way through the mud, pulling and pushing the boxes with them until they reached the scanty shelter of the old trench. Pugris had been attached to the front of the boxes. By means of these the men in front pulled the boxes along over and through the dead bodies while those in the rear pushed with all their might. After they had accomplished 100 yards of their journey only Lieut. Smyth and six men were left to get the two boxes along. In ordinary circumstances four men are required to handle a box of bombs. However the survivors reached the end of the trench, the party had dwindled to two – Lieut. Smyth and Sepoy Lat Singh. The second box of bombs had therefore to be abandoned and to haul even one box along in the face of such difficulties appeared an impossible task. Still pulling and hauling, Lieut. Smyth and Lal Singh emerged, wriggling painfully along into the open where they were met with an increased blast of fire. Surviving this, they crawled on, only to be confronted suddenly by a small stream which was too deep to wade. Still they crawled on and on in full view of an enemy now at close quarters, until they came to a point in the stream which was just fordable. Across this they struggled with their valuable burden and in a few yards they were amongst their friends in our trench, both untouched, although their cloths were perforated with bullet holes. Sad to relate shortly after reaching the trench the gallant Sepoy Lal Singh was killed. Each of the brave men with Lieut. Smyth was awarded the Indian Distinguished Service Medal. The men in the regiment believe that Lieut. Smyth bears a charmed life, for as he has had his cap blown off by shells five times, has had bullets through his clothes and lately while he was lighting a cigarette the match was taken out of his fingers by a bullet.” |

Next Draft Complete
It is satisfactory to note that the appeal for reinforcements for the Mobile Battery have been met with a very ready response, so much so that not only have the twelve men required been obtained, but also a fair number have been secured for further reinforcements. It is notified for information, however, that in future no one will be accepted who has not been a member of the Port Defence Volunteers for six weeks and has attained at least twenty gun drills. Everyone of the present twelve are members of the Corps. The following are their names:- Gunner Ellis, Gunner Sirr, Gunner Loader, Gunner Sharpe, Gunner Webb, Gunner Pearse, Gunner Watson, Gunner Lecky Thompson, Gunner Whyte, Gunner Wilcox, Gunner Foly and Gunner Trutwein. The Contingent will probably sail on the 18th inst. so as to be able to sail from Bombay on the 25th inst. Meantime they are doing four drills a day so as to become as efficient as possible. Everyone is of splendid physique and present a find appearance. |

The reinforcements for the Mobile Battery sailed this afternoon in the S.S. “Bangala” which left Latter Street Wharf at 2 p.m. The men first fell in at 8 a.m. to place their kit on board, a job that was completed by 8. 40 a.m. They fell in again at H.Q. at 12.30 p.m. for inspection prior to marching to the wharf to embark, long before which hour the relatives and friends of the departing men had begun to gather at the spot and by the time the fall-in was sounded there was a very large crown present.
At 12. 10 p.m. 160 of the St. Paul’s Cadet Coy. arrived. They were closely followed by the Cadets of the Diocesan High School under Lt. Ward (Principal) and Lt. Blakestone. Just previously, however, Subadar Major Jelal Din and fifty troopers of the Mounted Military Police arrived. Lt.-Col. Sewell and 116 rank and file of the B.R.V.C. headed by their Band (under Bandmaster Doog) came next. There were also fifty of the Port Defence Volunteers under Lt.-Col. Evans other officers present being Major Rennie, Capt. Pullar, Lt. James, Lt. Casson, Lt. Lynn, Lt, Dunk and Lt. Fish. On the extreme left of the line were Lt.-Col. Pedley, Dr. Murray and a detachment of the Ambulance Corps. Lt.-Col. Evans arrived at 1 p.m. and inspected the Battery which was drawn up inside the hall. He said a few encouraging words, wished them all good luck and said he felt sure they would bring credit to the Corps. The column then proceeded through Lewis St., Merchant St. to Latter St. wharf. Very large crowds lined the route and were also present at the wharf. The Mounted Military Police, who headed the troops on the march, presented an imposing spectacle with their lances. Behind them came the Burma Railways Vol. Band playing patriotic airs including “Tipperary.” Then came the Port Defence Vols., St. Paul’s Cadets, Diocesan Cadets, Burma Railways Vol. Corps., Rangoon Vol. Band, the Mobile Battery Volunteers and the Ambulance Corps. On arrival at the wharf the troops lined up on three sides of a square facing east, south and west in the following order: Military Police (west) St. Paul’s Cadets, Diocesan Cadets and R.P.D. V. (east) with the Ambulance detachment in rear, Major-Genl. Young (accompanied by the Brigade Major Capt. Broadbent) was present and Genl. Young, after inspecting the Battery, said he had not come there to make a speech but just to wish them goodbye and the best of good luck. He told them to take care of themselves and come back safely. Br. Loader called for three cheers for Genl. Young which were given with a will. Genl. Young then called for three cheers for the Mobile Battery and these were also given heartily. The Volunteer Battery then embarked on the “Bugala” at 1. 20 p.m. The Volunteer Band remained on the wharf and played appropriate tunes till the steamer left. As the vessel moved away the large crowd that remained burst in loud buzzas. The men were the recipients of several gifts among them being a purse of Rs. 100 to the old pupils of the Diocesan High School. At the wharf a set of respirators, a present from Mr A.K.A.S. Jamal, was handed to them. The Battery desire to express their appreciation of C.S.M. I. Johnstone who from the time of enlistment had worked day and night to make them a efficient as possible. |

Calcutta, but at the expiry of his time went Home and while there joined the local firm. He arrived in Rangoon at the latter end of 1911. He was due leave but preferred to join the Indian Army Reserve of Officers. He has written to say that he has been in several fights and had escaped without a wound. He, however, had to go on the sick list and return to the hospital at Basra. He was so anxious to get to the front again that he would not wait till he had properly recovered. He was very much liked by his superior officers of his firm with the assistants of whom he was very popular. His scrupulous attention to duty showed that he had the characteristics of a good officer.

Volunteering In Rangoon – Col. Graham’s Appeal
Lt.-Col. C.T. Graham, Commandant, Rangoon Vol. Rifles, writes us as follows:-
“In forwarding you a copy of a letter I have addressed to the Secretaries, Burma Chamber of Commerce, Rangoon Trades Assoc., Rangoon Municipality, Port Trust and the Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Burma and the Chief Collector of Customs on the subject of volunteering. I trust you will be so kind as to allow me through the medium of your paper, by publishing it, to further my appeal to smaller bodies with whom it would be difficult for me to get in touch. I have put forward this appeal solely in the interests of volunteering and trust it will meet with the support of the community in general. A large number of volunteers have really given up a great deal of their time in endeavouring to make themselves efficient and I feel confident that every man in the corps would do his best to take full advantage of any extra facilities granted to try and raise the standard of efficiency throughout his company and consequently the battalion as a whole. I think now it must be the desire of every man on the rolls that the battalion should be well spoken of and this can only be obtained by every individual doing his upmost to help.” Col. Graham’s letter reads:- “I trust that in making the following appeal in the interest of volunteering I may look for your wholehearted support. Now that nearly every man worth his salt in Rangoon is a volunteer the movement must surely have become a public one demanding public interest and the days when volunteers were rather a subject of scorn must, I think, have come to an end. Assuming therefore that, during this time of war anyway, volunteers are a necessity. It must obviously follow that training is equally essential. The Rangoon Volunteer Rifles have two days a week allotted for this purpose, viz Wednesday and Friday, when parades are ordered for 5. 15 p.m. on account of the difficulty men have in getting up to Headquarters earlier, but owing to the closing in of the evenings at this time of year and the further difficulties experienced, for various reasons, in moving a volunteer corps off its parade ground promptly, darkness sets in before we have time really to carry out any useful operations, half an hour being the upmost that we can look for. I therefore appeal to you to recognise those two evenings as volunteer drill evenings ; if possible close down earlier and give the volunteers every facility to reach Headquarters in time to allow us to move off not later than 5 p.m. I shall be obliged if you will give this matter your earliest consideration and inform me whether:- (i) the two days mentioned are most suited. (ii) I can order parades for say 4. 45 p.m. In addressing you on this subject, I feel convinced that with closer co-operation and mutual support between all concerned, this corps will make still further progress and attain a higher standard of efficiency while at the same time I think you will agree with me that to parade the battalions with barely half an hour’s daylight to work in, except for a route march, is barely worth calling the men out for. Capt. Graham’s Departure
Capt. Graham’s Departure
Last evening at the R.V.R. Officers’ Mess a farewell dinner was given to Capt. C.T. Graham, I.A.R.O. the late Commandant of the Rangoon Vol. Rifles. Major C.J.N. Cameron, the officiating Commandant, presided. Major-Genl. Young, Commanding the Rangoon Brigade was present and also Capt. J.T. Broadbent, Brigade Major, the officers of the Rangoon Vol. Rifles and Sergt.-Major Denny.
Major Cameron, in proposing Capt. Graham’s health, on behalf of the officers and men of the Corps wished him “God speed” and hoped that he would be back amongst them again soon. He did not think it was necessary to dilate upon Capt. Graham’s many good qualities as they were already known to all the officers of the corps but they all were agreed that Capt. Graham would show that he had not wasted his time learning volunteering (applause.) The toast was heartily drunk with musical honours. Capt. Graham feelingly responded in a brief speech remarking how sorry he was to leave the Corp and he also hoped that he would meet the members of it again at some future date (applause.) Capt. Graham left for Calcutta this morning by the S.S. “Bangala” from Latter St. wharf. He was given a rousing send-off by the officers and men of the Corps. At 6. 45 a.m. “Z” Coy. (dismounted) under Lt. McKeand ; “A” Coy. under Lt. Somervaille and Lt. Fogarty ; “E” and “F” Coy’s. under Capt. Primrose Wells and Lt. Ochme ; “N” Coy. under Lt. Stevenson and the “Highland” Coy. under Capt. Hill, Lt. Moir and 2nd Lt. Cochrane Wilson fell in at Headquarters. The parade was taken command of by Major W.A. Stewart (Adjutant) and the volunteers were played down to the wharf by the Rangoon Volunteer Band under Mr Duffy and the Pipers under Pipe-Major Arnot. At the wharf they were drawn up facing the steamer. Capt. Graham arrived shortly after and accompanied by Major Cameron, Major Stewart and Major Stevens, inspected the companies on parade. He then, in a short speech, wished them “good-bye” and wished the Corps every success. He asked them again to give their new Commandant every support and they would be bound to do well. He thanked them for their kindness in turning out as they had done. Major Stewart called for three cheers and those were heartily given. Capt. Graham was garlanded by a member of the Bombay Rice Merchants’ Assoc. and then proceeded on board. On the wharf were Lt.- Col. Evans and Officers of the Rangoon Port Defence Volunteers, Lt.-Col. Huddleston and Major Rennie of the Burma Railways Volunteer Corps, Capt. Hardiman, Moulmein Volunteer Artillery attached to the Rangoon Port Defence Volunteers, Major Dawson, I.A.R.O. and Lt. Burnskill, 79th Carnatics. |
