Volunteers
The Mobile Battery
Today a big batch of volunteers for the Mobile Battery left Rangoon. It is up to those who remain to see that the drafts asked for are supplied. Rangoon and Moulmein have good reason to be proud of the Battery, which has done so well. We mourn the deaths which have occurred among the first batch, but they were glorious deaths and even in these commercially minded days the old motto stands true Dulce et decorum pro patria mori. Reinforcements Major-Genl. Young’s Speech The third detachment of reinforcements for the Mobile Battery left this afternoon in the S.S. “Katori.” The detachment comprised twelve men:- |
Port Defence Vols.
C.W. Curtis J.L. Grant R. Anderson W. Grant |
Moulmein Vol. Rifles
W. Todd P. Daniel G.D. Stewart A.W. Garrood |
Rangoon Vol. Rifles
D. Edge A. Anderson C.B. Cowell |
Burma Railways Vol. Corps.
J.H. Silvester |
Of these P. Daniel comes from St. Patrick’s School, Moulmein ; D. Edge is from the Rangoon College. He was formerly a pupil in the Diocesan High School and two years ago, when in the tenth standard, passed first on the boys’ list and third in the combined list of Burma. A. Anderson is an employee of the Rangoon Municipality ; J. Silvester worked in the Burma Railways and was in H. Coy. of the Corps at Maymyo. C.B. Cowell belonged to F Coy. of the Rangoon Vol. Rifles at Myaungmya and R. Anderson was an old boy of St. Paul’s School.
All had to enlist in the Port Defence first and received their training in that Corps. Long before the hour fixed for the men to fall in, relatives and friends had begun to gather at the headquarters at 11 a.m. Major-Genl. Young, accompanied by Capt. Broadbent, arrived at the Rangoon Port Defence Volunteers headquarters and inspected the detachment, after which he said he wished them the best of luck and hoped they would be present at the taking of Baghdad or at least had a good show and would come back full of joy. They were quite young and he had one thing to advise them on and that was not to forget those they left behind. They were always delighted to hear from them and he asked them every time they could get a chance to post a letter to do so. Those left behind were always anxious to hear. He said he spoke from personal knowledge. He wished them goodbye and good luck. The men then fell out and chatted with their friends till 11. 30 when they were again falling in and addressed by Lt.-Col. G.H. Evans, the Commandant of the R.P.D.V. He asked them to remember those in Rangoon to any of those of the battery that they met. They had had a good training and he thought that they had not much more to pick up. He hoped they would have a good time and the best of luck and he hoped to see them all back again someday. The detachment then marched down to the wharf led by the Rangoon Vol. Bank under Mr Duffy, 2nd Lt. Casson, Adjutant, Rangoon Port Defence Vols., accompanying. On reaching Barr Street a very pleasing incident occurred. Word was received that a detachment of St. Paul’s cadets were coming up behind and the reinforcements were halted pending their arrival. The cadets some seventy strong soon came up and took their place at the head of the columns. It was a tribute to the battery in general and to R. Anderson, an old pupil, in particular. The march was then resumed to the wharf. The column was followed by a large number of relatives, friends and others on foot, in gharries, motor cars and on cycles, while the route was lined with crowds of spectators, every window of the various buildings being filled with onlookers. The men were the recipients of several presents among them being 1,000 cigars and each man was also presented with one of Mr Shepherd’s respirators by A.K.A.S. Jamal. The officers present (at headquarters) were Lt.-Col. Evans, Major Rennie, Capt. Pullar while 2nd Lts. Dunk and B. Hicks were on the wharf. Two men who were originally chosen for the detachment were unable to proceed viz Wakefield from Moulmein and Xavier from Rangoon. The former had to undergo an operation and the latter it was said was in hospital with a sprained knee, the result of a cycle accident last night. There was a very large crowd present at the wharf. The band played a number of bright and spirited selections. Sergt. Leeworthy accompanies the detachment as far as Bombay. Another detachment has to leave Bombay by February 10th. |

Letter from the Front
Miss J.B. Gunning, Civil Lines, Mandalay, has received the following letter from soldier on active service in acknowledgement of the gift of cigarettes and tobacco sent to the 1st Border Regt. Miss Gunning adds: “The subscribers who helped me in sending £2 to the “Something to Smoke! Fund ... The letter states:- “Dear Miss, many thanks for the present of cigarettes and tobacco which I received quite safe. I remember Mandalay quite well for I was stationed there 18 mths. before the war. I have lots of friends there whom I used to play football with and many are the times I have played football on the Upper Burma football ground. My Coy. won the senior football cup just before we came away and many happy times have I had in the Volunteer Hall at Mandalay when the concerts were going. I wonder if Mr Minnard, the Asst. Surgeon up at the hospital is still there. He was a real “toff” one of the right sort he was. He gave the Borders a fine send off at Mandalay and I live in hopes of seeing him again. I wish I was having a game of football or hockey now with Capt. Senior of Lt. Baxter’s team. They used to play for the Punjabis who were at Mandalay when we left. I hope you will excuse the liberty I have taken in writing this letter. You are the only lady I know who have sent anything for the troops and I was one of the lucky lads of the Borders to get it. Wishing you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. 9423. Pte. Lindsay, B Coy. 1st Border Regt., 87 Brigade, 28th Divn. M.E. Force. 25th Nov. 1915. |

Grounding of the “Ava”
The papers relating to the Marine Enquiry in the charges against M.D. Wylie, First Grade Licensed Pilot, for incompetency or carelessness in the discharge of his duties as a pilot on the 6th Dec. while in charge of the S.S. “Ava” which grounded on the DeSilva Shoal, were yesterday returned to J.E. Houldey, Dist. Magistrate from the Local Govt. ... .. that it was an error of judgement on the part of Mr Wylie and that action was being taken with a view to having the shoal marked with a lighted buoy. The findings, which was signed by H.E. Browning, Licensed Pilot, J. Morrison, E.W. Pratt, Master Mariner and J. E. Houldey, stated that the S.S. “Ava” owned by Messrs. Patrick Henderson, was proceeding up the river on the 6th Dec. in pilotage charge of Mr Wylie. At 6. 30 p.m. He was running with the Devil’s Hole lights in line and having seen what he took to be a nameless creek above the Panlaing Creek, he deemed it time to alter his course to the west in order to pick up the Choki lights. Accordingly he gave the order to starboard the helm a point, thus altering his course from N. by E. to ½ E. to N ½ E. About two minutes after doing so his ship grounded on the DeSilva Shoal near Military Buoy No. 6. The ship was refloated at 12.45 a.m. No damage was done. Mr Whylie said that he had made an error of judgement and starboarded his helm too soon. In the opinion of the Court, had Mr Wylie been at the point where he imagined that he was ... It was customary for all pilots to alter the course before the exact points where ... In this particular case, unless they did so, they would run a very good chance of being unable to get round quick enough and going into the left or east bank of the river. A good many calculations had been gone into with regard Mr Wylie’s exact position when he altered course ... .. the Court and Assessors were of opinion that they could not help them much. There was some conflict of evidence between the Chief Officer and the Captain of the “Ava” as to whether the Devil’s Hole lights were in line or not when the course ... ... Mr Wylie displayed incompetence or negligence. Unless he waited till he picked up the Choki lights in line, he could not be certain whether he had travelled high enough to turn or not. They did not consider the that the mistake which he made was due to incompetence or negligence. It must be borne in mind that this channel had only been opened at night for a few days when Mr Wylie came up. As Mr Wylie had had no chance of navigating this channel for over a year, they thought that it was very easy for him to made a mistake. They considered therefore that Mr Wylie made an error of judgement, but was not guilty of incompetence or negligence. They would add that as No. 6 Military buoy was apparently not placed to assist in navigation, in their opinion this shoal ought to be marked at night by a lighted buoy. |

There were two other items one a monologue ... in which Mrs Lister tried to be brave when left to spend the night alone in a Rest house having mislaid her husband Mr Dreadnought, on a railway journey. Military News - The Burma Contingent
A letter from the Front
A letter from the Front
Michael Rorke, who left Burma last year with the Second Burma Contingent in a letter to this paper states:-
"Just a few lines to thank everyone for the grand farewell that was given is on our departure from Rangoon. We arrived in England in the 10th Feb. I enlisted the same day in the A.S.C. in an ammunition column. I was the given two days leave after which I had to report to the A.S.C. Depot at Grove Park, from there I went to Bulford, where I saw snow for the first time in my remembrance. I might tell you it was jolly cold parading out in the mud and rain but it all helped to harden me for a strenuous life. I left for France on the 24th and arrived there on the 26th Feb., so you see I didn’t have many days in England. I have been here ever since moving up and down the firing line on various jobs. When I was attached to the R.E. taking barbed wire and sand bags for the trenches, I had a few lively experiences which I shall not forget in a hurry. I have seen some fine air duels and I can tell you it’s a sight worth seeing. When and where they occurred I am not at liberty to disclose. I suppose most of you have read of the ruins of different places; it is hard to realise it all until you have seen for yourself. When one has seen the refugees fleeing from danger with all their worldly belongings tied in a little bundle, I feel certain all my friends and hundreds of others would risk all to strike a blow for liberty and to avenge those poor women and children. I expect by this Burma is largely represented on the field. I haven’t come across any of my Rangoon friends yet, but I hope someday to have the pleasure of meeting some of them. I close trusting this letter reaches Rangoon safely and that it may help to bring a few more to the colours and wishing all a bright and happy New Year.” |

Each parcel contained 2 handkerchiefs, 1 packet of bachelor buttons, 1 shaving stick, 1 talc powder, 1 insect powder, 1 tooth brush, 1 tube dental cream, 1 pot Vaseline, 1 packet lifebuoy soap, 1 cake, 1 lb. chocolate, 1 tin vegetables, 1 bottle pickles, 1 pencil, 1 writing block, 1 packet envelopes, 1 packet of cards, 2 books, 1 cloth bag and direct from Cashmere were sent 5 dozen shirts and 10 dozen pairs of socks. The fund is now exhausted, while the number of men has increased and their need is greater than ever. Cheques or cash may be sent to the Mobile Battery Fund care of Messrs. A. The Pasteur Institute
A Private Meeting of the Pasteur Institute of Burma was called for 5 p.m. on Thursday last. A representative of the Rangoon Times, who attended at that time, was informed that the meeting was private, but that a report would be supplied next day to the press. As no report reached us yesterday in fulfilment of this promise, enquiries were made and we were informed that the matter was in the hands of Col. A.O. Evans on whom a representative called three times without success. He was informed on each occasion that Col. Evans was out, but that he had not gone to office. This morning, the report of the proceedings appeared in the columns of our contemporary. On making further enquiry we were informed by Col. Evans that no report could be supplied to the Rangoon Times but that we could take it from our contemporary. Such treatment would appear extraordinary, (especially as the institution intends, in fact will be obliged, to make annual reports for public subscriptions) ; but we are informed by Col. Evans that he had no intention of excluding us from obtaining the report and that had our representative succeeded in seeing him the information would have been readily supplied ; and we accept his assurances that his desire is to treat both papers equally, In view of the public interest that is taken in the Pasteur Institute, we publish the report for the information of our readers.
There was a meeting of the members of the Pasteur Institute Assoc. at the Institute on Thursday evening, when the question of changing the articles of memorandum came up for settlement. The proposal was to change the articles in question so as to allow of the scope of the Institute being enlarged as outlined by Col. A.O. Evans, Inspector-Genl. of Civil Hospitals, President of the Association, in his address at the opening of the new building last year. This enlargement is due to the fact that both the bacteriological and anti-rabies laboratories are in the same building. ... ... Immediately following the members meeting there was a meeting of the central committee of the Assoc. at which there were present with Col. Evans, in the chair, Sir Charles Fox, G.C. Stawell, A.W. Binning, M. Cowasjee, Lt.-Col. Townsend, Dr. H. Findlay, P.A. Churchward and M. Oppenheimer and Lt.-Col. Pearse, Director and Hony. Secy. ... ... The Association feels that the Govt. having put forward such very fair terms in regard to running and up-keep of the Institute, it behoves the general public to do their share to keep the Institute going and the attention of the general public is called to the fact that at present the housing for patients, except for menials, is very meagre ; there is practically no accommodation for the better class of patients ... ... |

B.A.A. Tennis
The best tennis seen for a long time was witnessed at the B.A.A. enclosure last evening and those present were well repaid for their trouble. Four matches in the Singles were on the card, but in that between W.S. Thom and Galstin, the former scratched leaving only three games to be decided. By a strange working of chance nearly all the best players were engaged, four at least being good enough to be considered as finalists viz Pears, Po Thaw Da, A.P. Benemy and H. Latimer. Pears had no trouble in beating his opponent J. Galstin 6-2, 6-1 Latimer had even an easier victory in his tie against W. Penn, whom he defeated by 6-0, 6-2 The game between Po Thaw Da and Benemy, however, went the full three sets and it was only after a very keen and exciting struggle that Benemy succeeded in getting h better of his opponent. The winner is an old and experienced player, who, though he has never figured very largely in the singles, has always been reckoned amongst our best players and last year after several attempts, with G. Lewty as a partner, carried off the prise for the doubles. The main feature of his play has always been his accurate placing and cleaver volleying, and it was this that finally gave him the victory. Last year he met Po Thaw Da early in the tournament and defeated him fairly easily, but fell a victim to Latimer, who was runner-up to Stubbs. On the other hand his opponent of last evening has always been considered a really good player, capable of distinguishing himself if he would but bestir himself. But year after year he has shown the same nonchalance and has not only been defeated but has failed to do himself justice. This year, however, he had evidently made up his mind to a serious effort, which resulted in the match proving exceedingly interesting from start to finish. Benemy played an excellent game. His placing was as good as ever. But he frequently made a misjudgement of strength, a fact he admitted to the strong breeze that was blowing all through the game. Both players made strong returns in which the ball just skimmed the net and both showed great cleverness at the half-volley, as well as at the backhand stroke, so that it became difficult to say which was better. It was in the matter of placing alone that Benemy showed his superiority, though in this too Thaw Da was also quite good. It took Thaw Da some time to wake up to the fact that he would have to bestir himself, with the result that Benemy had established a strong lead of three games to nil before Thaw Da began to male himself felt by winning the fourth game with the loss of only one point. Benemy won eh fifth, but Thaw Da took the sixth and seventh, making the score 4.-3 in Benemy’s favour. The latter increased his lead at the eight game, but his opponent then won two games in succession. ... ... final scores were : Benemy 7-5, 2-6, 8-6 On Monday the games are:- Singles – F.A. Whyte vs G. Lewty and L.E. Sinclair vs L.P. Saunders. Mixed Doubles – Mrs Davern and T.Z. Oung vs Mrs Arnot and C.P. Hill |

A successful concert organised by Mrs Pullen ... the replacement of existing old fashioned method of lighting with butties in the Military Station Hospital by a more modern method. Mrs Pullen had worked hard for the success of the entertainment ... She had secured the assistance of many well known local amateurs and although the programme was not over laden with items it lasted from 9.30 until midnight owing to the encores which were asked for. ... The programme was opened by Mr Norman Lindsaye, who played two of Chopin’s Etudes ... Mr Lindsaye is a brilliant pianist ... Mrs Henstock’s song “The Reason” ... was well suited to her voice. She gave it with great refinement and was obliged to reappear for an encore ... Mrs Reid, who has established her reputation as a violinist, played ... with great success. Later on in the programme, she with Mrs Laidlaw (piano) and Mr Norman Lindsaye (cello) were heard to great advantage ... Mr Leonard Graves told some yarns, the points of which, though not wholly unfamiliar, he made to the obvious enjoyment of the audience. Miss Pullen sang ... “O Lovely Night” with much feeling and expression. Mr Sedgwick who suffers a little from an unnecessary fear, has a very pleasant, baritone, which he should make more use of; his singing of “Melisande” was very well received. ... Mrs Nolan, who was to have sung Sullivan’s “My Dearest Heart” was unable to be present owing to illness. An amusing interlude was the appearance of Rifleman Sanders of the Rifle Brigade, who sang and danced and was a great success ... Mrs Woodham’s rendering of ... “A Summer Night” was admirable, her voice is full and true and it was a great disappointment that she did not respond to the demand for an encore. ... was brought to a brilliant close by the appearance of Miss Aileen and Miss Doris Woods, who had given their services to help a worthy cause. Accompanied by Mrs Harry Woods they contributed several popular numbers ... |

Attack on Mr J.W.D. Aiken
A report has been received the J. Meikle of the Rangoon Mining Co. of a disturbance among the company coolies at Tavoy which culminated in an attack on Mr Donaldson Aitkin, the manager there. When the coolies were engaged by Govt. they were taken on a contract and given certain advantages. The company had to take the over on the same contract terms and recover the advances made. On March 2nd the men were paid accordingly to the terms of their contracts but seemed dissatisfied and as their attitude led Mr Aiken to think there might be trouble he stayed an hour longer at the mine before leaving for the night. At the end of that period he with his assistants left the mine in a motor. The road is a winding one and takes a turn at a complete right angle just before the second bridge. Shortly before reaching this turn the party came across a coolie maistry and some of the men, but rode through them without any trouble but on turning the corner they found a gang of about fifty coolies armed with sticks, crowbars etc. standing by the bridge across which an obstruction had been made with some planks which had been laid one on the other to a height of three feet. This obstruction extended right across the bridge and before it was noticed the car had dashed into and knocked it over, the vehicle being damaged slightly. Mr Aiken foreseeing trouble told the others to drive on while he himself got out. He spoke to the men, who, seeing that he was alone, rushed towards him and he was forced to fire his revolver which he did twice in the air. This however, had no effect, the men edging still nearer and one man armed with a two foot crowbar managed to get behind him. Seeing that matters were getting serious Mr Aiken fired a shot over the man’s head and dashing past ran to where a bus was about to start for Tavoy. This was about a quarter of a mile distance, but he managed to get there in safety and on it returned to Tavoy where he reported the matter to the police Six men have been arrested and the remainder are being kept under surveillance. An enquiry is being held by Government. |
