As you probably know the colonial-era headstones now at Ye-way came from the Cantonment, Town and Kemmendine Cemeteries.
Brief history of the cemeteries in Rangoon:-
When in 1853 orders were issued prohibiting burials within the town, land had been set aside for cemeteries and allotted to the various communities; so came into existence the cemeteries at Pazundaung. A cemetery was also established in the Cantonments area under Military authority; originally the Cantonment Cemetery was sited on the slope of the ridge to the west of Cemetery Road, below the Sale Barracks, but this ground was not used after 1854, when the existing Cantonment Cemetery was established. Both these cemeteries were used for the burials of private persons who died in the Cantonment limits as well as for the burial of soldiers. But besides these lawful burial-grounds, unauthorised cemeteries grew up outside the old limits of the municipal area, such as the burial ground to the north of Bagaya Pongyi Road. Furthermore, by 1880 the legal cemeteries within the town were overcrowded. The Health Officer reported that the depth of graves was commonly not more than one and a half feet and that this was a serious danger to public health. It was not, indeed, for another twenty years that any steps could be taken to remedy this situation, then, in 1900, the Committee acquired two sites, one at Hanthawaddy Road and the other at the east of Rangoon, for use as burial grounds and in 1907 most of the older cemeteries were closed.
