Rangoon Cemeteries, Memorials and Burial Records
In amongst all the destruction of the last two decades we find that the Yeway Christian Cemetery Association has created a little miracle in salvaging some of the gravestones and monuments and collecting them into a garden of remembrance at the new Christian Cemetery near Mingaladon. In addition to these remnants, there still remain some Jewish and possibly Armenian graves in the old cemetery grounds, as can be seen from the satellite view on the map. We also have good reason to believe that there are undisturbed graves and memorials in Rangoon and we hope to provide proof of that on these pages before March 2012.
The garden of remembrance at Yeway is something to be thankful for, but please remember it is only that, it is not a cemetery. Some memorials are amalgamations made up from two or more originals, and so the texts and names may not necessarily be matched. The fact that these memorials have been assembled by people whose first language is not English has also created some strange juxtapositions. We are working with BACSA and the Yeway Association to improve the situation and to ensure that the remaining texts are maintained above ground level, the stones cleaned and the poor repairs may be refixed by a stonemason. We also know that some memorials have been "rescued" by organisations and individuals for reasons which may have been justified at the time, but are now looking decidedly flimsy. We will be calling for these to be returned to the Christian Association as soon as we are certain that their future is not in danger. There are something like two hundred separate monuments or identifiable fragments here, of which only some 55% have been recorded on the LDS or in BACSA's previous Register. There are numerous memorials in the churches, some of which contain valuable information. It is worth noting that some are still to be found inside public buildings such as the Post Office on the Strand, dating from WWI, and should be read in conjunction with the lists of the Anglo-Indian Force. |
