Smart Passage
Last year the S.S. Irrawaddy, in command of Capt. Currin, made the passage from home in 32½ days including two days detention in the Canal. She arrived on the 24th July. This year she has done the run out of Liverpool under command of Capt. Hannah in 30 days arriving off the Pilot Station on the 24th instant – the smartest passage, we believe, on record. Owing to the boisterous weather prevailing outside, the Irrawaddy was unable to get a Pilot to board her – otherwise she would have been up in town on Tuesday. She was however berthed yesterday [26th]

Error
We have received a letter from Singapore stating we are in error in saying that the quickest passage from Mandalay was recently made by the Yomah which arrived here on the third day. The Shin Sawboo, commanded by Capt. W.D. Morgan, did the journey once in two days, our correspondence says. If this is the fact, we suppose it must have been on the return journey after taking dorians up for King Theebaw’s Court, and the Shin Sawboo probably had moonlight and proceeded at night. We certainly never heard of a two days’ journey by river from Mandalay before, although express racing canoes which Theebaw’s father Mindoon used to send down occasionally, used to bring letters from the Capital in three days.
